The nine pieces pay mischievous homage to the rhythmic intricacies of popular dance forms. They were first composed as ‘Dances for 2 Pianos’ in 1976, but have been re-scored in versions for piano and orchestra, woodwind ensemble, piano and orchestra, and symphony orchestra, in which versions they have been called ‘Concert Dances’. A version for cello and piano was created by the composer in 2001 for the cellist Martin Rummel and a version for violin and piano followed soon after, both being given the more apt title of ‘Jazz Dances’.
